Entry 74

I felt a tap and turned to find Calmet pointing off in the distance. A group of damned were in a line on their knees, looking down at something. It was clear what it was. All the rivulets of liquids had started to find small routes which had been carved into to the stone. They were flowing toward where the creatures with their backs to us knelt.

“There is one of these streams at each of the four points of the plane. From here the suffering flows to a larger waterway that circles the castle before cascading down through the great opening onto the next level below.”

As we walked up, Calmet kicked several of the damned out of the way. There, for the first time, I could see what they called “suffering”. It was basically all the fluids and bit of debris that had come from those being tortured. I watched as the damned knelt along the river, running their fingers through the small watercourse, picking out the larger bits and eating them.

“What are they doing, and why are they eating it?” I looked up, completely grossed out.

“Three reasons. The first two are universal across all the planes. First, we cannot send the suffering down to its final destination littered with unusable bits of crap, so there are souls on each level that for eternity must sort through the streams of suffering picking out the unwanted particles. Second, as you noted, some souls must recover between tortures. They are brought here to sort through the suffering, cleaning it up while they relive in their mind’s eye the events that brought them here.”

“All of them? Their sins, that is.”

“Well, for most, it is only a couple of sins which acted as the catalyst for their damnation. More importantly, and we did not realize this at first, most of the actions that decided their final fate were small things they could have easily chosen not to do. Most fell into the category of things they themselves wished they had not done, even while living. So realizing the sins that condemned them here were small, insignificant things greatly increases the anxiety and pain of their eternity, thus improving the quality of all their suffering thereafter.”

“That’s unbelievable but not totally surprising. And the third?”

“The third is more specific to this plane. These are the souls of those who were… what do you call it, the opposite of gluttony? Those who sacrificed their health, body and waste resources in the pursuit of their idea of beauty or the perfect body.”

“You mean like bulimia? It’s an eating disorder where the person, due to mental issues, consumes food and then purges their body through vomiting so they won’t gain weight.”

“That is it,” agreed Calmet. “Believe it or not, it is prevalent in almost all the Creations but for a variety of different reasons.”

“So now they are forced to sit here and eat all the shit that comes flowing down the stream with the liquid suffering?”

“Yes, but add to the equation that their appetite is never sated.
